Adventures in VHS – The book

The home video explosion of the 80s is one of the defining moments in our cultural history. VHS (and, for a while, Betamax) offered greater control over our home entertainment and opened the door to all manner of films that might never have otherwise seen the light of day.

Adventures in VHS is the story of how a young boy stumbled blindly into this world of horror, comedy, sex and violence – and fell in love with it all. Featuring a foreword by Lloyd Kaufman and contributions from Brian Yuzna, Jim Wynorski and more, its a must read for cult movie fans.

Adventures in VHS… officially ‘accepted to Yale’.

The book was crowdfunded in 2017 and published in hardback and digital formats. The hardback quickly sold out and the book was added to the Manchester Metropolitan University Film and Media Studies BA (Hons). Since then, it has also been requested for the hallowed shelves of Yale University in the US.

The road to publishing was a little longer than anticipated and, in addition to the podcast, was supported by social media and other PR and marketing activity – from ‘example chapters’ and interviews, to news articles and other podcast appearances (see below).

Example chapter: Ghoulies on HeyUGuys

Example chapter: No Safe Haven on Birth.Movies.Death.
